student artwork in energy calendar

Look what one of our students is doing! Sofia's artwork will be in the Electric Department's calendar. Her work is the choice for the month of March.

From the Burlington Free Press:

About a dozen Burlington fourth-grade students entered the Burlington Electric Department's doors to celebrate their art work that makes up BED's 2010 Energy Efficiency calendar. The two-hour ceremony and pizza party, held at the utility's Pine Street facility, celebrated the pages of artwork packed with tips on how to save energy. Each fall, BED officials visit fourth-grade classrooms in the city, explaining how to use energy wisely. After that, students pick up pencils, markers and crayons to draw pictures on how to conserve energy. This is the seventh year the project took place, with work entered into a contest and judged by a panel. The top 13 offerings make it into the calendar. All drawings will be on display in January at Burlington City Hall's Metropolitan Gallery.

Ahh Paris!

My husband and I recently returned from a week long trip to Paris and both of us can easily say it was the best vacation we've ever had. Technically, I had been to Paris twice before, once as a child and once as a college student. But in both cases we were passing through on our way to another destination so I didn't really see much of Paris. It felt as if this trip was my first authentic Parisian experience.

Spending an entire week in the "City of Lights" gave us just enough time to explore Paris without rushing around like tourists with a checklist. We saw the major sites, cruised down the Seine, biked through the city streets, picnicked in Giverny, visited world-class art museums, shopped in boutiques, and still had plenty of time to linger over delicious lunches in the cafes.

Davis Studio is sponsoring a multigenerational trip to Paris this coming April 23- 30th. The trip is intended for teens, ages 12 – 18 with an accompanying adult. We are excited to be partnering with Karen Kane from Paris by Design for this unique travel opportunity. We have room for a couple of additional people and would love for you to consider joining us.

Trip Details:
April 23-30, 2010
Experience Paris from an artist's perspective!
Join us for a multi-dimensional, multi-generational week of art appreciation in Paris. We'll look, learn draw, and paint - and engage all of our senses as we immerse ourselves in the works of the Impressionists and the city that inspired them.

What's special about this trip?

• Our small group of students and adults will step off the beaten path and back in time as we follow in the footsteps of Monet, and other impressionist painters. This trip is best for students between the ages of 12 and 18 with an accompanying adult.

• Our explorations include a guided tour of city highlights, guided visits to museums, gardens, markets and artists' studios - as well as time on your own to reflect and create.

• You'll receive your own travel sketchbook. Our structured writing & drawing activities, as well as work with watercolors and collage, will help you record your experiences. No previous artistic experience is required.

• We'll prepare you before the trip with workshops on art history, French language, and culture; we'll help you keep the trip alive once we're home.

Visit our website for further details.

Karen Kane of Paris by Design is offering the early bird price to anyone who puts down a deposit prior to November 1st.

HUMANE SOCIETY PARTNERS WITH YOUNG ARTISTS
Local Studio Teaches Art, Young Donors Share Their Talents
South Burlington, Vt

For the second year in a row, the Humane Society of Chittenden County (HSCC) has partnered with Teresa Davis of Davis Studio in Burlington to help raise funds for homeless and abandoned animals. The exhibit of 31 portraits painted by young artists, ranging in age from 4 to 12, includes an opening reception and online auction and has been dubbed "Our Best Friends Too."

Last year sales from the online auction raised more than $3,000 to support the care and re-homing of animals in Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties. Each spring, Davis Studios hosts two sessions of art classes for young students during which artists create two animal portraits. At the end of the sessions, each artist donates one of their two creations to the Humane Society of Chittenden County.
"This partnership represents so many exciting things," said B.J. Rogers, Executive Director of the HSCC.

"As an organization whose work with young people is central to furthering our mission, it's a treat to work with Teresa and the young artists she instructs and engages. Through these amazing and colorful portraits, they give their time, energy, and talents in support of the animals in our community. Their work and their
generous contributions are truly inspiring."

The auction, which is currently live and accepting bids, will run through Tuesday, August 25th. The official opening of the exhibit – to be shown in the lobby of the HSCC – kicks off this Thursday with a 6:00pm reception in conjunction with "Canines & Cocktails", a twice per summer evening gathering at the HSCC.

The event will include free Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, a smorgasbord of dog treats by PupCat Bakery, delicious food (for people!), live music by the Patricia Julien Trio, and a cash bar including a special mocktail for the evening’s younger attendees.

The Humane Society of Chittenden County is an independent, private, nonprofit, animal welfare and sheltering organization founded in 1901. Serving Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties, HSCC welcomes some 1,000 animals and 15,000 people each year to its Animal Care and Adoption facility at 142 Kindness Court in South Burlington, VT. HSCC receives no state or federal funding and carries out its mission of fostering compassionate treatment of animals and preventing animal suffering exclusively through program revenue and the generosity of individual and corporate donations.
